Defects: Section 1

ScratchContamination

Every car will have some type of surface contamination as it’s near impossible to prevent it, short of never driving your vehicle and housing it in a protected environment. It is mainly down to airborne particles bonding to the surface. Paint should be as smooth as glass but run your hands over the paintwork and it will no doubt feel rough. These particles are removed through the use of a clay bar and lubricant. For heavy contamination, heavier duty clay bars are used but these will impair marring in the paintwork and some correction may be required afterwards.

ScratchSwirl Marks

These are caused by incorrect or poor washing practise. Particles or dirt get trapped between the paint surfaces and washing medium, be it the rollers at a car wash or a sponge for example. These particles are then continually rubbed across the paintwork inflicting damage. Swirl marks don’t allow uniform reflection, deflecting the light hitting the body and reducing the overall appearance. Through a choice selection of compounds and machine polishing these can be reduced or removed totally dependant on severity and paint depth.

ScratchBuffer trails

These are caused through incorrect machine polishing where the pad isn’t kept flat to the paint’s surface. These are normally seen as a haze, sometimes in a specific pattern, depending on the movements of the polisher. Most common after a car has had repair work where new paint has been applied.
